I know that you haven't updated here in a while, but you are kind of local to me and I wanted to see what you think of an idea I am developing. I'm trying to get together a co-op run similarly to Voyagers Inc. in Maryland. I'm working on my ideas on my blog: http://www.galileoeducation.org/Blog.html

Voyagers was started by parents of highly gifted kids although they don't limit enrollment to gifted kids. If you, or anyone you know, is interested, let me know!

Actually, it was the WISC III(which I don't think they take anymore, but I am assuming we "grandfathered" in).

Ah, got it :). If she was that young, she probably took the WPSSI. I don't know if that has a GAI, but Davidson is now taking a GAI at 99.9 even if you don't have a FSIQ of 99.9. The WISC (older kid IQ test for ages 6+, I believe) allows the psych to combine the perceptual reasoning and verbal subtests and get a "general ability index" (GAI) if the speed and memory subtests are a lot lower than the verbal and perceptual tests, thus lowering the FSIQ.

We had the IQ test done while Oldest was in Kindergarten when we were applying to a gifted magnet school(it was a requirement for the application). The scores were extremely high, and because she hit the ceiling in many of the subtests(and scored the requisite 99.9% on those), her overall score was most likely lower than it should have been(missed out on their cutoff by .1%), which is the reason they requested additional testing. I think I blogged about it way back when in 2007, but I don't remember completely. :-)
Thanks for sharing about your children's experience. DD said she didn't finish the last 4 questions in Math, and of course I have no idea how that will affect overall scores.

My younger dd is taking the EXPLORE through WATS this year as well and my oldest, 11 y/o, is giving a shot with the hs tests -- ACT/SAT. Good luck to your girl! My oldest took the EXPLORE when she was 9 and I think that it was worthwhile even, if like you say, the results aren't the be all end all of the child's innate ability or aptitude. Dd came out crying and convinced that she had done horribly b/c she wasn't used to having a test where she didn't know all of the answers. None the less, she did quite well. I am finding that coming across hard stuff occassionally is a good thing for her regardless of how she does, though.

BTW, you do know that Davidson requires both IQ and achievement scores so you'll have to spring for more testing should her EXPLORE scores meet their requirements?

Hi TAM! I'm in Larimer, not Boulder County and don't have a blog up and running yet, but I am working on a website. We're partially hsing our youngest this year (some subjects at home) and actually do have our oldest back in ps this year with a grade skip -- which is working well thus far (the GT coordinator at her middle school has been the best support we've ever had in the ps system). Our oldest has been back and forth btwn hs and ps.

I just wanted to post that I am early in the process, but I am working on getting together discounts for homeschoolers of gifted kids (not just locally). I only have a few commitments so I don't have a "join the group" page up yet with discount codes, but I hope to have it together in the next month. Take a look at my site to see where I'm heading: www.GalileoEducation.org. We are secular despite a friend telling me that the combo of my Italian last name and Galileo in the title might make us sound Catholic ;). Dh is a first generation Italian-American and I took the name of my site from his dad, Galileo.

You know, some people do what you have done the past two months and feel no stress over it. They call it unschooling. :o) (I'm not one of them. I thrive on stress.)

Thanks so much for this encouragement. I have a gifted child I'm considering home schooling and am encouraged to hear that there are other people out there who are like me. My other two boys are happy at their school, but my gifted child just sits there 1/2 the day waiting for the rest of the class to catch up. I feel like he would be much better in a one on one situation instead of a class of 27 students.

I do understand your frustration with not being like the other moms. I am on my way to pick up my child from preschool where I stand out as the very uncool mom who drives a used car (that's always dirty from the gravel road we live on) and dresses her kid in hand me downs. Try talking about planting a garden and canning your own green beans and see the looks you get!

LOL! I am definitely an addict to books. We've had up to 56 books checked out at once between me and my 3 kids, plus what we were using for homeschool. Try paying late fees on those once...then you cut down on the # you check out. Yikes!
